30 Ways To Wear: Zara Navy Printed Shift Dress

I'm thrilled I've hit 30 wears with this dress so I can finally dedicate a post to it! An impulse buy from Zara during a trip to Sydney, before we had a Zara here in Brisbane. This dress is something I love wearing.

30 Ways To Wear: Navy Shift Dress

30 ways to wear #30wears challenge: Navy Zara printed tunic shift dress

Cost Per Wear

I can't calculate cost per wear with this dress sadly as I forget how much it cost. I did buy it back in September 2012! It's taken me around 6 and a half years to hit 30 wears with it, despite really wanting to hit 30 wears back in 2018, as it's not the best length for days with toddlers. If you're running around and bending over and picking things and children up the tunic style can feel a little short. Of course there are some ways I can work around that, that I've shown below.

Another factor affecting the cost per wear calculation is that I actually managed to tear this dress a few years ago. I had to have it repaired, so that cost would factor in as well. I can't remember how much that cost though either! 😂

30 Ways To Wear A Navy Shift Dress: Video Style

Navy Shift Dress With A Pop Of Colour

4 ways to wear a navy printed tunic dress with a pop of colour | awayfromblue

I'm all for adding a little extra colour to an outfit with accessories. And this navy dress is the perfect neutral piece to really let the bright accessories pop! A necklace, bag or jacket, all look great with the neutral navy backdrop. I like red with the navy, but green works well too.

Belting a Printed Shift Dress

3 outfit ideas with a printed shift dress belted | away from the blue

This is probably one of the simplest ways to change up a dress, just add a belt! It's a nice way to make an old favourite feel a little fresher, just by adding another accessory.

Tunic Dress Worn As A Top

5 ways to wear a navy printed shift dress as a top work and casual | away from blue

As mentioned above, this tunic length can feel a little short some days. The longer sleeves and modest neckline mean this top is great for the office, just too short to meet the dress code guidelines. Adding a pencil skirt over the top solves that problem and instantly creates a professional outfit from a casual dress. It works well for stay at home mum days by tucking the tunic into some shorts too!

Navy Printed Shift Dress With More Blue

3 ways to wear a navy printed shift dress with blue accessories monochromatic style | awayfromblue

It's no secret blue is my favourite colour - I love wearing every shade of it! A neutral navy shift dress is a great excuse for me to add more blue to my outfit - even if the shades don't match, the blue on blue colour combination is one I really enjoy wearing. Denim jackets, or blue bags, anything goes!

Shift Dress With Ankle Boots

outfit ideas navy shift dress and ankle boots awayfromtheblue

A dress and ankle boots is a great way to extend the life of your summer dresses into spring and Autumn - it's a classic combo and one that works so well with a shift dress like this.

Printed Tunic Dress With Converse

Of course if boots aren't your thing, a dress and Converse works well too! They are a really practical choice for mum life and like the boots above it's a combination I wear in spring and autumn quite  a bit.

Shift Dress In Winter

how to layer up a summer shift dress for winter 4 outfit ideas | awayfromtheblue

You can extend the life of your favourite summer dresses by wearing them in winter too! With a cosy pair of tights or leggings underneath, and a few more winter layers. This is a great option for running around with the kids too, you aren't as worried about the tunic length if you have a pair of leggings underneath.

Printed Shift Dress In Pregnancy

4 ways to wear a printed shift dress in pregnancy | away from the blue

This dress was the best in all trimesters! It was simple and fuss free and as you can see the print is great at hiding a baby bump for the early second trimester. It was nice and light to wear when pregnant in heatwaves. Although it did get a little short in the third trimester with the bump pulling it up, nothing a pair of leggings couldn't fix!

Weekday Wear Linkup! Wearing Dresses As Tops With Pencil Skirts

Scroll down for another Weekday Wear linkup, and to see how I've layered up two printed shift dresses for the office by throwing a pencil skirt over them. (Plus the first photos of my new shorter haircut are on the blog at last! I donated 38 cm of it recently!)

What I wore:

Why I wore it:

This navy printed shift dress was an impulse Zara buy when I was visiting Sydney a few years ago (before we got our own Zara in Brisbane!). This is not the first time I've worn it as a top, but it is the 30th time I've worn it. I'll need to do a 30 ways to wear post with it soon!

I wanted something professional enough to wear in the office but also easy enough to change up for a rare date night out with hubby to see a comedian at the powerhouse. I got him tickets as a Christmas present. It was super easy to make this outfit go from day to night just by taking off the pencil skirt, perfect for dinner and drinks after work before the show.

The magenta Balenciaga day bag was big enough to carry everything I needed and was a fun pop against the navy and black.

BagBalenciaga Day bag in 2005 magenta

Why I wore it:

Making the most of my outfit formulas and wearing a similar outfit again! I really like this shift dress but it's been neglected in my wardrobe as I felt it was a little too short for life with kids. It made me smile through the day when I had to keep pulling the skirt down as I was worried the dress was too long and peeking out the bottom! The dipped hem at the back helped with that. I will definitely need to start wearing this dress more. Last time I wore it was back in 2017!

The geometric print on this dress has tiny little pastel pink shapes, a very different shade from the bright magenta Balenciaga day bag, but I think they worked well together and I really liked this combination, just as much as I did the previous times I've worn it!

Last worn: geometric print shirt dress, blush and rose gold necklace, black pencil skirt, camel ballet flats, Balenciaga magenta day bag (above).

How You Can Wear It:

A too short dress can still be worn to the office if you cover it up with a pencil skirt. Using this trick can turn any dress into a top! This works particularly well for longer sleeved shirt dresses, as they just look like pretty blouses, and you instantly have a more formal office outfit just by adding the skirt.

Printed Dresses, Gold Sandals and Chloe Paddington Bag: Summer Style

You know I love my outfit formulas! Printed dresses are a great piece to include in an outfit formula as they make each outfit look different. I'm wearing two cute printed dresses below, with green necklaces, rose gold sandals and a Chloe Paddington bag, and because I changed up the dress each time they look completely different.

What I wore:

ShoesNovo Tawny rose gold sandals
BagChloe Paddington in 2007 Brun

Why I wore it:

This dress is one that I got from my sister (video explanation here) and I'm surprised she wanted to give it away as I associate it with her so much! One of my favourite photos of her and my eldest son together she was wearing this dress. Of course I am extremely grateful to get it!

A striped tee dress has been on my want list for a while, but I figured I'd start shopping when the boys are bigger and there's less bending over and picking the kids up! I found the length on this really nice though. Hubby and I had a rare few hours to ourselves to do some boring bank stuff while the inlaws watched the kids, so it was the perfect opportunity to break out this tee dress. I actually really liked the length and could see myself wearing this around the boys. The slightly dipped hem in the back helps with that!

The style challenge for the day was 'pure gold' so I layered up the gold pendant necklace, rose gold sandals and gold padlock Chloe Paddington bag together. I really liked all of the gold with the black and white stripes.

Last worn: gold pendant necklace, rose gold sandals, Chloe Paddington bag. First time I've worn the striped tee dress as it's a recent addition to my wardrobe.

Why I wore it:

Again, another printed dress with a green and gold necklace, and the same rose gold sandals and Chloe Paddington bag. Despite being the same outfit formula as I wore above, I love how this looks completely different with the navy dress!

This dress isn't much shorter than the one above, but really feels it (especially as the hems are curved and split before they join in the middle. It's strictly a kid free dress, unless I wear it as a top, which I've done a few times in the past.

I wore the dress like this a couple days before Christmas, to get some last minute stocking filler things I hadn't been able to buy before when I had the kids with me, and to make a start on the Christmas food shopping to minimise what I needed to buy the weekend before Christmas. It was a productive few hours, and this dress was a nice light layer for the hot summer day.

How You Can Wear It:

A simple printed dress is a staple for a hot summer day. They are so easy to style too. Add some metallic accessories and a fun bag and you're set for the day. You can even repeat the same or similar accessories the next day with another dress for a completely different outfit despite following the same formula and wearing some of the same pieces.

SAHM Life: Navy Dresses, Colourful Scarves and Mater Nappies

Talking about Mater nappies today, and sharing some dress outfits I wore recently. Because sometimes it's nice to break out of the stay at home mum default outfit of jeans and pull on a pretty dress!

Bright scarves make accessorising a printed dress really fun. As a bright and colourful scarf is bold enough on it's own, I try to wear it with a nice neutral outfit. In both of the outfits below I've layered up a navy printed dress with tights, ankle boots, and then a bold pop of colour with a scarf and my mustard Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan bag.

What I wore:

Dress: Zara printed bib front tunic dress
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots

Why I wore it:

This is what I wore to go to the closing down sale of my favourite opshop. There was a big 'fill a bag for $2' sale which I was lucky enough to wrangle the morning browsing at while hubby stayed home with the kids. It was supposed to be a warm day, but it was a cold early morning start for me so I wanted a nice cosy scarf to add to my outfit. I thought this one was perfect, the orange really pops with the navy and the little mustard micro Regan bag was another touch of colour that worked so well with the dress.

Had a fun morning browsing, filling two bags full of things for the boys and I. You can see what we got here. After I headed to Kmart, picked up a pair of shoes I'd been lusting over, and was back home in time for swim lessons. We ended up going out for lunch after, so I was glad I dressed up a little in this dress. Although I was grateful for the tights underneath, this dress can seem a little short when you're constantly bending down to toddler level!

Mater Nappies Review

Full disclosure - I received these nappies to try from Mater for the purposes of reviewing them, after chatting with the brand at the Blogger's Brunch a few weeks ago. I've also used these nappies before when my little one was a baby.

Mater Nappies for Toddlers Review | away from the blue blog

What Are Mater Nappies?

Nappies developed by Mater Mother's Hospitals! They are part of Australia's first product range developed by a hospital. Welcoming over 10,000 babies a year into the Mater Mother's Hospitals around Australia, they know babies well!

Benefits

The nappies are made from ultra-soft breathable material, dermatologically tested and proven not to cause skin irritation. The toddler nappies have double leg cuffs and provide triple protection against leaks, as well as a super-absorbent core.

Our Experience

As mentioned above, I've tried Mater nappies before. When my youngest was hospitalised as a baby almost 2 years ago (see pic above). During our extended stay at the Mater the hospital provided the nappies for us to use. I liked them and had no issues with them. When we went home though, we also went home with a bunch of medical equipment and a baby with a NG tube - both things we needed training on before we were discharged. We went back to our usual nappy brand we had lying around as it was easier and life continued on. Talking to the ladies from Mater during the Bloggers Brunch, I told them a little about my son's story and decided to give the nappies another try now he's bigger.

We found that the Mater nappies didn't leak - I think that's the biggest plus right there! During some of the time we were trialling the nappies, my little one was on a course of antibiotics so you can be assured they were tested to the max!

Will I Repurchase?

Yes! They are not only a product that works for us, I also like that the proceeds from the sale of the Mater Baby Products go to support Mater Little Miracles, funding specialist life-saving care and research for babies in Australia. If you're interested, you can get them online here or find a stockist here.

Why I wore it:

Since I liked the outfit formula above so much, I repeated a similar one again, as I like to do! This time, I picked a bright yellow Love quotes scarf to go with the striped navy tee dress, but I kept the bag and ankle boots the same. These ankle boots are the most comfortable I've ever owned, I was sad to see the brand shut up shop a couple of years ago!

While the linen scarf is a bold bright yellow and the Rebecca Minkoff Regan bag is more mustard, I think the two different shade worked well together in this outfit.

Wore this for a fun day out shopping with my mum and the boys. I got some early Christmas present ideas for the boys as we went around the stores. It was such a good day out, even if I didn't buy anything for myself. I'd been eyeing a dress in Jeanswest for an upcoming wedding, but I was a bit disappointed when I saw it in person. I did like this outfit a little more than the one above - the dress is a more mum-friendly length, with the hem longer in the back!

Orange and Yellow Scarves Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

It's easy to stick to neutral outfits in winter, as you're guaranteed all your layers will go together! But it's nice to add a touch of colour through bright accessories. I love my colourful handbags, but a bold and bright scarf is another fun way to accessorise. Bright citrus colours like orange and yellow are a great pop against navy outfits.

Colourful Winter Outfits: Navy Dresses and Pink Skull Scarves

Sometimes on my work from home days I like to throw on a dress. It's a quick outfit to pull together to get the boys out the on time door for daycare drop off, and it's comfortable for sitting all day at home working.

I stuck to my usual easy dress outfit formula for two recent work from home days, and added in some colourful cardigans and Alexander McQueen skull scarves. Even though it's winter, it's nice to wear a bit of colour.

What I wore:

Jacket: thrifted SES Fashions mustard yellow cardigan
ScarfAlexander McQueen pink pashmina in skull and floral print
DressAtmos&Here navy stripe tee dress
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
BagRebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold

Why I wore it:

Every time I wear this dress I seem to notice it's been a long time between wears! With the thick fabric and longer sleeves, it's usually packed away with my winter things which doesn't give me many opportunities in the year to wear it. It's such a comfortable tee dress though, with a slightly longer hem in the back so that I feel comfortable sitting on the floor with the boys when I'm wearing it.

You might have seen I've just posted blue and yellow outfits, and I'm wearing the colour combination again! I like yellow and blue together, and really like this mustard cardigan with the navy striped dress. Of course with the yellow cardigan, it made sense to pick out this Alexander McQueen skull scarf. It's yellow skulls on a pink background so a nice combination with this outfit. The mustard yellow Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan bag was another further bit of matchy-matchy.

The only thing I didn't like about this outfit was the tights. Having no luck finding fleece lined leggings, I tried a pair of these footless tights - you can see the little slivers of exposed ankle. They got some pulls in them on this first wear. With the boys in daycare while I worked it wasn't like I spent a long day with the kids being rough and tumble - I'm sad that they didn't have the quality behind them (and that I didn't keep the receipt!). Otherwise, this was such a great outfit.

Rebecca Minkoff Micro Regan and Mini MAC Comparison:

A little comparison video of the two handbags I'm wearing in this post, the micro Regan and mini MAC.

ScarfAlexander McQueen modal skull scarf in white/pink
Dress: Zara printed bib front tunic dress
ShoesAsos Cleo leather boots in tan
BagRebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC

Why I wore it:

Unlike the outfit above, I wasn't quite as pleased with this outfit. It seemed like a great idea, a navy shift dress layered up with fleece lined tights and tall boots to keep me cosy, with a purple cardigan and pink scarf for some extra colour, topped off with the neutral silver Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC bag.

As I mentioned on Instagram, I think the white print on the dress and the mostly cream scarf didn't go that well together. I really like pink and blue together, but I think the first outfit works better as the scarf is more of a block colour. With the cream background and the hot pink skulls on this scarf, it doesn't sit as nicely with the print of the dress. Still a great colour combination and scarf, and just maybe not the right piece with this outfit.

The cardigan also was not as thick as I needed on such a cold day. The dress is long sleeved, but it's a thin viscose material and a thin cardigan on top wasn't as warm as I needed for a colder than expected winter day. Luckily I spent most of it working from home, but having to do the daycare runs and taking my son to his specialist appointment in the afternoon made me wish I'd worn something a bit warmer.

Skull Scarves Under $50:

They might not be Alexander McQueen, but they are still as fun to wear!

How You Can Wear It:

It's easy to add colour to a winter outfit with bright cardigans and fun scarves. A cheerful scarf with more than one colour in the print (like the pink and yellow skull scarf in the first outfit) makes it easy to pick other pieces like a cardigan that coordinates with it. Or you can go all out and pick different complementary colours like I did in the second outfit. Sticking with a neutral outfit base like a navy dress makes adding colourful accessories even simpler.

Embroidered Tops In the Office With Balenciaga Bags

After a rough week of feeling unwell and working from home, I felt well enough to return to the office. I decided to wear some of my embroidered pieces to boost my mood. I love embroidery, but it's been a while since I wore these tops so it was definitely overdue.

What I wore:

ScarfLouis Vuitton monogram shawl in bleu
BlouseJeanswest Elise longline embroidered shirt in coconut blue
PantsJeanswest 'Fiona' skinny leg pant in shiraz
Shoes: Asos leather Chelsea boots in tan
BagBalenciaga part time in black 2010 with SGH

Why I wore it:

Unfortunately, despite having regained most of my voice the day before, constantly greeting people in the office and explaining that I had almost lost my voice resulted in me pretty much losing my voice  again before lunch time! While meetings were difficult, they weren't impossible. I felt able to follow along mentally even if I couldn't contribute much to the discussions. There was a lot of pointing and gesturing at screens. Thank goodness for being able to use messaging apps to communicate with my colleagues in other offices rather than picking up the phone!

Lack of voice aside, I wanted to bundle up warmly as it was predicted to be one of the coldest winter days, with single digit temperatures. I'm from Brisbane, 8 degrees Celsius is freezing to us! I picked my cosiest scarf, this Louis Vuitton monogram shawl. The night before as I'd planned my outfits I'd tied it so it was more like a snood / infinity scarf. As I shared on Instagram though, it wasn't as easy to replicate on a cold and dark morning. I didn't realise it looked quite so messy until I saw the pics. Oh well, it definitely kept me warm.

Probably could have picked a warmer jacket over this blazer, and maybe not rolled my pants up to expose my ankles on such a cold day. I did love this outfit otherwise though, it was perfect for the day at work, just not so much for a nearly freezing commute!

Why I wore it:

Thought I'd wear this embroidered peasant tank to the office, as I was surprised to realise I'd never done that yet. I love this and wore it a lot while breastfeeding. It's a long flowy tunic length, perfect for lifting up slightly to feed baby but keeping your stomach covered still. It worked well in the office too! I can't believe this is the first time I've worn this top this year, it's a favourite and has been neglected too long.

While I didn't wear the trench coat in the office and swapped to a cardigan, I did enjoy all the brown tones in this outfit when I wore the trench. The scarf looks a bit crumpled from being in storage and I briefly considered ironing it, but just wore it anyway. Creases happen!

Just like the day above, my voice was better in the morning and almost non existent by the end of the day. While the day started off great with a cup of free chocolates and then lunch being provided at the office, my voice and I were exhausted by mid afternoon. I had a late meeting right before I left and my colleague was sliding me throat lozenges across the desk when she heard me trying to speak on the call! 😂
