Handbag Lover's Gift Guide For 2020!

It's that time of year again, where blogs turn into gift guides! Each year I publish this one gift guide: the perfect gift guide for a handbag lover, no matter your budget! This year, because it's 2020, I've added a little bit at the end for ways you can support some local Aussie businesses too. I try to pick pieces that will ship internationally, but I'm sure you will understand that the local section may only ship within Australia.

So, if you're looking for the perfect gift for a bag loving friend or relative, or just a little bit of bag-candy, this is the gift guide for you!

Spectacular Splurge-Worthy Spoils

These bags are $500+ and above - not the kind of thing you would give to a casual acquaintance, but certainly something special for someone close. Wives, girlfriends, mums, sisters - if you have the cash to splash you can't go wrong with something from this list! Sticking with classic styles and neutral colours is always a good idea, especially if you're not entirely sure what their preferred colour bag would be. Probably something to be 100% sure that you know they are after before investing so heavily in this section though!

Modest Mid-Range Designer Choices

At $100-$250 you can look at bags from their favourite contemporary designers, or maybe even a SLG (small leather good) from a luxury brand. There are so many options at this price point to choose from, this budget doesn't limit you but lets you get creative with how you want to spend. Think wallets, clutches, card holders, wallet on chain bags, wristlets... You can give them an accessory from a brand of their dreams or their perfect bag from their favourite contemporary designer. Mine being Rebecca Minkoff of course!

Bargain Bag Finds

Got less than $100 to spend? No worries! Think of ways they can accessorise bags they already have - keychains and bag charms are a good way to go, or a skinny silk scarf to tie in a bow on a bag or wrap around bag handles. See my video for more ways to accessorise a bag! What about a little pouch or wristlet they can use to keep things safe in their bag? Or a gift card to help them purchase the bag of their dreams they have been saving for? You can even hit up sites like ASOS for high street versions of designer styles, without the high price tags.

No matter the budget you have set aside, remember that the Thanksgiving Black Friday sales in the US will be starting soon, and other countries are starting to follow with similar sales. That bag that may have been out of your budget before might be a much more attractive price now or in the days to come, so get adding to cart in preparation for the sales!

Shopbop have up to 50% off designer bags, and you can get an extra 30% off at Rebecca Minkoff with code 'TAKE30' on orders over $150.

A Little Something For Yourself?

All that shopping for other people can lead to a little splurge or two on yourself! The categories above are good for gifts as you get the "new bag" experience with all the wrapping and boxes and that new bag smell! But if you're looking for a bag for you, why not try the preloved market? Easier on the wallet and the environment! Sites like Fashionphile, Yoogi's Closet, Bag Mad Boutique, Vestiaire Collective make it easy to snap up an authenticated designer bag at a bargain price - just be sure to review all the pictures and description carefully so you know what to expect with the condition. eBay is an option too, but I highly suggest using an authentication service like Authenticate First before buying anything designer from eBay.

Shop Local

There are so many local businesses who would really appreciate your support this Christmas. In the sprit of shopping small and supporting local that's so needed for  2020, I wanted to share some. While they are certainly not all bag based they have a lot of great gift ideas to surprise, spoil or entertain your loved ones this Christmas.

For The Little Ones:

For The Grown Ups:

  • Yondale Designs - beautiful silver jewellery that will be treasured for years to come (I have two cuffs I adore from this company that I never remove from my wrist)
  • Handbags on Etsy - you can filter for the perfect gift from your country, state or city!
  • Katherine By Katherine - vegan friendly handbags and accessories, made in Brisbane!
  • Fashion Scarf Girl - another Queensland mum, with multi-buy scarf discounts! (I have been a brand rep for this company in the past and I have also bought a lot of her scarves with my own money!)

Have fun shopping and finding that something special to bring yourself or someone you love a little bit of joy this year!

Weekday Wear Linkup! What I Wore For Christmas - Casual and Dressy With Gold Earrings

For today's Weekday Wear Linkup I'm sharing what I wore for Christmas!

I wore a maxi skirt for Christmas eve and a maxi dress for the big day, both accessorised with cross body bags and some pretty gold earrings. Two very different outfits though, as we dress down for Christmas eve and dress up for Christmas day. Both days are filled with family but Christmas eve is a lot more casual as we decorate cookies, attempt Christmas craft and snack as we watch a Christmas movie. Christmas day we dress up to enjoy the family time, unwrap gifts, and have a big delicious feast.

What I wore:

Rebecca Minkoff red micro Avery cross body bag with ribbon and bell Christmas bracelet| away from the blue

awayfromblue Instagram | casual Christmas eve outfit festive Santa glitter tee with gold bauble earrings and red rebecca minkoff bag
Earrings: Colette Ciao Bella glitter ball drop earrings
Tee: festive glitter Santa tee
Skirt: thrifted pinstripe maxi skirt
Shoesslim navy and pink Havaianas (gift from mum)
Bracelets: the usual plus Christmas bow bracelet (with bells!)
BagRebecca Minkoff red micro Avery cross body bag

Why I wore it:

Another year of wearing my novelty Santa tee! My sister bought us all these festive glitter tees one year and so every year my question about what to wear for Christmas eve is partially answered - depending on the weather I might wear shorts or a maxi skirt with the tee. It was a little cooler and threatening rain so I figured a maxi skirt was perfect to stop me being too hot or too cold. The day was rain free but there was a huge storm in the afternoon which meant we stayed a little later at my parents until it had blown over!

The gold earrings were a recent gift from my mum - I spotted them while we were out shopping before Christmas and she bought them for me when we were browsing Colette. They look so much little gold baubles I just had to have them, and knew that they would fit in with the glitter on my tee and the Christmas bell and ribbon bracelet (another tradition, just as much as the tee is!). I'm hoping that because they are a classic gold I will get some wear from them outside December too. They look a lot more subtle in the pictures than they do in person!

Kept it simple with the bag. Red and green is so festive so this cute little red Rebecca Minkoff bag was an obvious choice. I wore it last year too!

Last worn: festive tee, pinstripe maxi skirt, Rebecca Minkoff micro Avery bag. First time I've worn the gold earrings as they were a recent gift.

Other ways to wearfestive tee and shorts, pinstripe maxi skirt and pink scarf, Rebecca Minkoff micro Avery bag and floral dress.

Perfect for pregnancyfestive tee in second trimester.

Dress: Kmart tropical notch neck floral maxi dress (gift from mum)
Shoes: Wittner 'Jasmarie' studded sandals
Bracelets: the usual plus vintage silver charm bracelet, diamond and pearl bracelet
BagChanel vintage quilted lambskin flap

Why I wore it:

A much dressier outfit for the big day - we spent the morning at home with the kids, unwrapping presents and enjoying their surprise with everything Santa brought them. Then it was off to the first set of grandparents for more presents before leaving again to end the day down the coast with my family. It's a bit of travelling for one day but it's good to see everyone. Photo is a little dark as it was quite cloudy when I took this pic in the morning and I didn't want to open up the blinds - we had some toys in the back yard for a big Christmas surprise once all the presents were open!

If you're a frequent reader you'll know that I love my Kmart floral dresses! I had went into the store with my mum a few weeks before Christmas to check out another dress I'd never had a chance to try on when I was with the boys, and was disappointed to see it didn't look as good on as it did on the hanger. Mum had spotted this pretty maxi dress for me to take into the change room too and I fell in love with it! She kindly bought it for me and I knew it would be the perfect Christmas day dress.

The chandelier earrings were a gift from my mum too, last year! I thought the gold went nicely with the gold hardware on the vintage Chanel bag. With the statement earrings I didn't feel the need to add a big necklace to this, I thought the bag and earrings were enough, especially with all my silver bracelets. I decided on this delicate Tiffany necklace which matched the silver bracelet stack. Sometimes I like mixing metals with my accessories.

Last worn: gold chandelier earrings, diamond necklace, studded sandals, vintage Chanel flap bag. First time I've worn the teal floral dress as it's a recent gift.

Other ways to wearstudded sandals and shorts, vintage Chanel flap bag and tee dress

Perfect for pregnancystudded sandals in second trimester, vintage Chanel flap bag at 30 weeks

How You Can Wear It:

A classic maxi skirt or dress can be perfect for a Christmas gathering. They can be dressed up or down easily, and in our Queensland summers are a great choice to beat the heat. Might not be the best idea if you have a snowy Christmas though, unless you have a free hand to hold the hem up whenever you step foot outside! Adding a pretty pair of statement gold earrings can help you feel a little festive too whatever your weather.

Wearing Tops Over Maxi Dresses With Ankle Boots: Casual and Dressy

Following a simple outfit formula and adding a top over a printed maxi dress to make it a skirt, but creating two very different looks!

What I wore:

Brisbane Fashion Runway show 2019 touch of glitter sqequin tank over snake print maxi dress with black blazer vintage Chanel | awayfromblue

snake print maxi dress with Chanel vintage quilted lambskin flap | awayfromtheblue

awayfromtheblue Instagram | black blazer with sequin tank over snake print maxi dress for brisbane fashion runway show
Earrings: Kmart mustard gold tassel earrings
JacketWarehouse cropped zip detail jacket
Tank: thrifted Valleygirl metallic sequin tank (gift from my mum)
DressJeanswest grey snake print maxi dress (worn as skirt)
ShoesAcne pistol boots in "skin"
BagChanel vintage quilted lambskin flap

Why I wore it:

Sequins and snake print together is not my normal style of dressing, but I pushed myself out of my comfort zone a little with this outfit for the Brisbane Fashion Runway show. The theme was a touch of glitter and I think this tank nailed it perfectly!

I knew I wanted to wear this snake print maxi dress but couldn't find a sequin topper, so thrifted a few possible necklace options at the opshops after spending a few weeks fruitlessly hunting for something with sequins. None of the necklaces felt quiet right with the dress but luckily my mum found this sequin tank for just $2 in her local opshop and it was exactly what I needed! Big thanks to my mum!

Apart from the $2 tank, everything else was already in my wardrobe. The cropped black blazer is one I won in a blog giveaway years ago and considered donating it a few times. Glad I kept it as it was a much cooler day than expected with the rain all morning. Thankfully it cleared up in the afternoon for the show.

Had a really fun time despite worrying I'd feel out of place, never been to an official fashion show before but Emily and Mel were great people to go with. Big thanks to Emily for the photos too!

Last worn: cropped blazer, gold tassel earrings, snake print maxi dress, Acne pistol boots, vintage Chanel bag. First time I've worn the thrifted tank my mum found me.

Other ways to wearcropped blazer and lace dress, snake print maxi dress with red clutch, Acne pistol boots and ruffle dress, vintage Chanel bag at Christmas.

Perfect for pregnancysnake print maxi dress at 39 weeks, Acne pistol boots in third trimester, vintage Chanel bag and last pregnancy pic.

Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
Bag: Amerii medium sling rattan bag in black (c/o)

Why I wore it:

This was the morning after the night before! 😂 Needed something simple and comfortable after a few drinks before, during and after the fashion show! Mum life means 3 drinks in one night and staying up past my normal bed time is far too much, ha! Stuck with the same outfit formula but a lot more casual.  I love wearing this high-low maxi dress as a skirt and the grey tee was the perfect topper with it.

The black straw bag and ankle boots were simple matching accessories that made getting ready in the morning a bit easier! We made it to church but did spend the rest of the day afterwards at home, trying to relax as much as you can with two little boys!

Tee Dresses Layered For Winter: Anniversary Weekend

Still playing catch-up with blog posts, as I wore these outfits a few weeks ago! We celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary at the end of May. It was a big one for us, with our house build completed, moving into the new house, and a trip overseas to Europe and back to Scotland, where we first went together after our engagement. This time with the kids in tow! With all of these big things I was expecting a quiet weekend for our anniversary, even though hubby had told me to keep the weekend free.

He surprised me with a kid-free weekend away on the Gold Coast, in the same hotel we celebrated out first wedding anniversary in! It was a wonderful surprise!

What I wore:

JacketJeanswest Kitty denim biker jacket
ScarfStella McCartney heart print scarf
DressCotton On 'Tina' white striped tee dress in Lissy black / Gardenia
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
BagChanel vintage quilted lambskin flap

Why I wore it:

When hubby let me know what the surprise was I knew instantly I was going to wear some of my dresses that hadn't been worn in a while! I worry this one is a little too short for days with the boys, but for a weekend away it was perfect! As we were driving down I noticed a sign advertising Seafire - a big fireworks event on the beach. This wasn't the perfect outfit for that - although my big blanket scarf did come in helpful to shelter us from a rain shower and keep us warm as we sat on the beach - but it was fun to attend the show anyway. I've never seen fireworks on the beach before, really enjoyed it!

The vintage Chanel bag was another must-have due to being kid-free! It's lambskin so a bit too delicate for me to wear it around the boys very often! It fit just the essentials and my camera inside which was nice.

Why I wore it:

Our second day on the coast, another tee dress! This one was a spring / summer favourite when I bought it when my oldest was a baby, but when he got mobile it got less and less wear. I usually wear it as a top with a skirt over it to make the length a little more practical for running around with the kids. But being kid-free, it was easy to wear with tights and ankle boots. Winter on the Gold Coast is still a little chilly!

This mustard scarf is a great combination with the botanical print on the dress, it compliments the yellow nicely. Again, a simple outfit that I enjoyed wearing!

Maxi Dresses With Denim Jackets, Ankle Boots and Cross Body Bags

I love dresses and ankle boots in autumn! And although it's a lot cooler in Brisbane with winter just a few days away, (and I'm freezing away in Scotland!) a light denim jacket was all that was needed on the warmer early autumn days when I wore these outfits.

What I wore:

Jacket: Bubblegum denim jacket
NecklaceJeanswest Taryn turquoise tassel bead necklace
DressJeanswest Sophia high-low maxi dress
ShoesAcne pistol boots in "skin"

Why I wore it:

I wore this pretty maxi dress out to brunch with some other Brisbane style Instagrammers. When I first tried on this dress in Jeanswest back in Spring last year I was wearing ankle boots and I loved how it looked - so I am glad with the cooler weather I got to give this combination a wear!

We all caught up for a wonderful brunch at Little and Oliver's on the Bayside and then some of us went and took a few extra photos afterwards. Big thanks to K for taking this shot for me!

I rarely get a chance to wear this vintage Chanel bag so I decided to wear it out since I was kid-free for a rare change! It was a nice accessory with the colourful printed dress.

Why I wore it:

Repeated the outfit formula from above again with different pieces. You can't really see in the pics but I picked my tan ankle boots to go under this tie dye maxi dress with the peony pink Rebecca Minkoff Darren cross body bag and the same trusty denim jacket.

Couldn't resist being a little matchy-matchy with the blush necklace to match the blush pink bag! Wore this out to church on a rather busy day. The dress was a throw on and go easy outfit.

Christmas Outfits: Casual and Dressy Maxis

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas with your friends or family! We hosted Christmas this year, which always makes things a little more hectic, but it's always fun.

Below I'm sharing two Christmas outfits - a casual one for Christmas eve and then a dressier one for Christmas day. Also the first time in a couple of years I've bought a new dress just for Christmas!

What I wore:

Christmas even novelty festive glitter santa tee with jersey maxi skirt and red bag | away from blue

Top: festive glitter Santa tee
SkirtJeanswest Luxe jersey maxi skirt
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
Bracelets: the usual plus Christmas bow bracelet (with bells!)
BagRebecca Minkoff red micro Avery cross body bag

Why I wore it:

Christmas eve in my family is always a casual day, the purpose being to relax and spend time together. We all meet up at my parent's place, and commence our yearly traditions. Christmas cookie making, craft making, Christmas movies and a lot of laughter. Definitely the best way to begin Christmas, spending time with people you love.

We've been wearing these Christmas tees to celebrate for 6 years - we each have one, and although I have to keep buying the boys new ones as they grow, this green Santa tee has been worn regularly every year, through both my pregnancies! It's another fun tradition to have.

I couldn't resist adding this red Rebecca Minkoff Avery bag to my outfit - it's such a festive bag it was a frequent go-to over December.

Last worn: green Santa tee, black jersey maxi skirt, Havaianas, Rebecca Minkoff micro Avery bag.

Bracelets: the usual plus silver charm bracelet

Why I wore it:

While Christmas eve is dressed down, on Christmas day we love to dress up! I'd seen this maxi dress at Jeanswest a few weeks before Christmas, and with some left over gift card to spend decided to treat myself to a new dress for Christmas, something I haven't done for a couple of years.

Christmas day was also a fun and family filled, with presents, putting our new Christmas crafts to good use, and marvelling over the kid's excitement with their gifts. There was a little stress as I hosted Christmas lunch, but so worth it in the end when you get to sit down and eat together! Even if I did mess up the cooking a little bit.... This maxi dress was perfect, I was so glad to finally get to wear it. It's sure to pop up a lot more often on the blog now!

I did want to curl my hair and be all 'done up' for Christmas, but by the time I finished prepping for Christmas day it was 10.30 pm on Christmas eve so I just decided to go to bed instead of staying up to curl my hair, and ran the straighteners through it in the morning. It's nice to want to do everything on Christmas, and wonderful when you achieve it, but at the end of the day (as it is every day) your sanity is the most important thing! Plus with two boys under five that extra 30 minutes in bed makes a difference when they come wake you up early Christmas morning! 😂

Last worn: first time I've worn the maxi dress and the sandals as they are new purchases. Vintage Chanel bag.

Other ways to wearVintage Chanel bag and skinny jeans.

Perfect for pregnancyVintage Chanel bag at 40 weeks.

How You Can Wear It:

Christmas time is a great time to dress up or dress down - there are so many outfit options! You can go for a fun novelty tee (or knit if it's colder where you are) for a casual outfit, or glam it up a little with a maxi dress. Anything goes!

Maxi Dresses For Different Events: Wedding and Kids Birthday Party

I love maxi dresses, for everyday wear and for special events. They never look over or under dressed for any occasion! Wearing two pretty blue ones below, dressed up for a formal event and dressed down for a casual kid's birthday party.

What I wore:

pastel grecian maxi dress with vintage Chanel bag and louis vuitton monogram shawl for waterfront wedding | awayfromblue

Chanel vintage quilted 'Diana' lambskin flap for a wedding | awayfromtheblue

awayfromblue instagram wedding guest maxi dress outfit blue pastel grecian dress with cobalt louis vuitton shawl vintage chanel bag

ScarfLouis Vuitton monogram shawl in bleu
DressJeanswest Heather textured maxi dress in eggshell (C/O)
Shoes: NineWest "Quicken" wedges in natural
Bracelets: the usual plus silver charm bracelet
BagChanel vintage quilted lambskin flap

Why I wore it:

I had been looking forward to this day for so long! One of my oldest friends was getting married and we were so thrilled to celebrate with the couple. While his wife is someone I've only gotten to know over the past few years, I met him all the way back in uni so hubby and I are good friends with him. (I met my hubby in uni too, a couple years later!).

It was literally the only sunny day in over a week of rain and storms, they couldn't have had a better day. The sun came out for the ceremony (overlooking the beautiful water) and when the breeze started to pick up and get cooler in the evening I had my Louis Vuitton shawl in my bag. It's the first time I've worn this shawl as an actual shawl and not just as a scarf!

The bag was another accessory I love - a vintage Chanel flap I don't get to wear often, but treasure the times I do!

The shoes I was not too happy with. You might have seen on my Insta stories that taking a few steps out the door to leave resulted in the sole of one of my shoes flying off! So I ran back inside and superglued it together, hoping it would hold out for the party, and trying to ignore the fact that I put it on a little crooked....thankfully, it held together well. The other shoe on the other hand decided to fall to pieces in the same way, as I walked through the middle of the tables at this small and intimate wedding. I've had them for a few years, and I got them pre blog, but in the 6 years I've been blogging this is their 7th wear so it's not like I've overly worn them! I suspect the heat / humidity has got to the glue holding them together while they've spent most of their life stored in a box.

On the plus side, the wedding was wonderful, the ceremony so moving, the food delicious, the speeches both hilarious and heartwarming, and the dancing wonderful. Even if it was a bit of a challenge dancing with lopsided shoes after consuming a couple of glasses of champagne! 😂 I ended up copying the mother of the groom and going shoe-less in the end.

Other ways to wearLouis Vuitton shawl woth jeans and tee, grecian maxi dress for birthday party, nude wedges and lace dress, vintage Chanel flap for Christmas day.

Why I wore it:

The weekend before the wedding was a bit cold and wet, so I ended up layering my maxi dress up a little more, with the mustard scarf, denim jacket and ankle boots. Had a bit of a busy day, with swim lessons in the morning, followed by a birthday party for one of little T's friends, then a trip down the coast to spend time with my parents.

The ankle boots were a perfect choice for the wet weather and my layers kept me nice and cosy. I thought this maxi dress would be perfect as I've never been to a birthday party at McDonalds before and wasn't sure what to wear! It was interesting seeing what the other mums were wearing, so many different outfits - and I saw a few similar outfits to other things I was thinking of wearing! - but of course the best dressed was the birthday girl.

It was a lot of fun, getting to chat to the parents of some of the kids I have only heard about from the boys stories after daycare. It was also very noisy, as the kids had a great time running around and playing together.

How You Can Wear It:

A maxi dress is a wardrobe staple as you can really make it work for you, for any event or season! You can dress it up with luxe accessories or down with a denim jacket, and you can easily add an extra layer if it gets chilly.

No shopping haul this month! I only spent $2 on this Kmart dress. Spent a lot of money finishing my Christmas shopping though!
